Gangotri is a small, sacred town nestled in the Uttarkashi district of Uttarakhand, at an elevation of approximately 3,100 to 3,415 meters amidst the Garhwal Himalayan peaks. It's revered as a primary pilgrimage site dedicated to Goddess Ganga, standing at the spiritual source of the Bhagirathi River, which later becomes the Ganga. This destination draws pilgrims, spiritual seekers, and trekkers alike, offering serene natural beauty alongside its profound religious significance. A unique aspect is the shifting of Goddess Ganga's idol to Mukhba village near Harsil during the harsh winter months when Gangotri becomes inaccessible due to heavy snowfall.

Travel Tips
Due to its high altitude (around 3,100-3,415 meters), acclimatization is crucial. Take it easy on the first day, stay hydrated, and be aware of symptoms of altitude sickness.
Non-vegetarian food and alcoholic drinks are generally not allowed in Gangotri town due to its religious sanctity. Expect predominantly vegetarian options.
Carry adequate warm clothing, even during peak summer months, as temperatures can drop significantly, especially at night and at higher altitudes like Gaumukh.
Roads to Gangotri can be prone to landslides during the monsoon season (July-August). Check road conditions before travel during these months.
Restrictions
Gangotri Temple is usually closed during winter (November to April/early May) due to heavy snowfall. Plan your visit accordingly, as the idol of Goddess Ganga moves to Mukhba village near Harsil during this period.
A permit from the forest department (available in Uttarkashi or Gangotri) is required for the trek to Gaumukh Glacier and beyond. Ensure you obtain this in advance.
