Katra is a small town in the Reasi district of Jammu and Kashmir, nestled in the foothills of the Trikuta Mountains at an altitude of approximately 875m. It primarily serves as the base camp for the revered Mata Vaishno Devi pilgrimage, drawing millions of devotees annually. This town is ideal for religious tourists, families, and those seeking spiritual experiences combined with a mild mountain trek. A unique aspect of the pilgrimage is the strict prohibition of alcohol and non-vegetarian food on the Vaishno Devi yatra route.

Travel Tips
Pre-book helicopter services to Sanjichhat well in advance, especially during peak pilgrimage seasons and festivals like Navratri, as demand is high and slots fill quickly.
Obtain your Yatra Parchi (pilgrim registration slip) either online or offline before commencing the Vaishno Devi trek. Adhere to all RFID and security protocols as mandated by the Shrine Board.
Wear comfortable, closed-toe, and anti-slip trekking shoes for the 13 km uphill journey to Vaishno Devi Bhawan. Avoid wearing brand new shoes on trek day to prevent discomfort and blisters.
If visiting during the winter months (December-February), carry heavy woolens, thermals, and insulated jackets, as temperatures can drop significantly, especially at higher altitudes near the Bhawan.
Restrictions
Alcohol, non-vegetarian food, and tobacco are strictly prohibited on the entire Vaishno Devi pilgrimage route to ensure the sanctity of the shrine.
