The Aranmula Uthrattathi Boat Race is Kerala's oldest river boat festival, deeply intertwined with the spiritual traditions of the Sree Parthasarathy Temple in Aranmula. Unlike competitive races, this event is a ritualistic offering to Lord Krishna, held on the Pamba River in Pathanamthitta district. It features unique Palliyodams (snake boats) rowed by hundreds of oarsmen chanting traditional Vanchippattu songs. The festival culminates in the Valla Sadya feast, commemorating a historic rescue of temple offerings. It attracts pilgrims and cultural enthusiasts seeking an authentic glimpse into Kerala's religious and maritime heritage. The racing component was introduced in 1972, adding to the ceremonial water procession.

Travel Tips
The Aranmula Boat Race falls within the monsoon season (August-September). Be prepared for heavy rainfall with appropriate rain gear. While this means lush greenery, it also implies potential humidity and occasional disruptions.
Aranmula is a village, and accommodation options are limited, particularly during the festival. Book your stay in Aranmula or nearby Chengannur (approximately 10-11 km away) several months in advance to secure preferred lodging and avoid inflated prices.
Utilize public transport, such as KSRTC buses, for cost-effective travel within Kerala. The nearest railway station is Chengannur, offering good connectivity to major cities. From Chengannur, local transport can take you to Aranmula.
The festival draws thousands of spectators, leading to large crowds along the Pamba River banks. Arrive early to secure a good viewing spot, especially for the main procession and race. Consider elevated viewpoints if available.
Restrictions
Alcohol is generally restricted in many parts of Kerala, especially near religious sites. As the Aranmula Boat Race is deeply religious, it is advisable to avoid consuming alcohol in public during the festival. Respect local customs and traditions.
