Chettikulangara Kettukazhcha, also known as Chettikulangara Bharani, is a religious and cultural festival centered around the Chettikulangara Bhagavathy Temple near Mavelikkara in Alappuzha district, Kerala. It is primarily a thanksgiving offering to Goddess Bhadrakali for a bountiful harvest and protection, celebrated by the 13 'karas' (regions) of Onattukara. The festival is renowned for its colossal, elaborately decorated Kettukazhcha structures—towering effigies of horses, chariots, Bhima, and Hanuman—some reaching up to 100 feet, which are paraded to the temple grounds. Alongside this spectacle, the unique Kuthiyottam ritual involves young boys performing a devotional dance. This 1200-year-old tradition draws pilgrims, culture enthusiasts, and photographers seeking a distinctive display of devotion and communal artistry unique to Central Travancore.
