The Feast of St. Francis Xavier is Goa's most significant Christian festival, celebrated annually in Old Goa (Velha Goa). It commemorates the death anniversary of St. Francis Xavier, locally known as 'Goencho Saib' (Lord of Goa), whose mortal remains are enshrined in the Basilica of Bom Jesus. The festival is marked by nine days of Novena prayers leading up to the feast, drawing thousands of local and international pilgrims. Outside the Basilica, a large fair with food stalls, souvenirs, and trinkets creates a festive atmosphere. This event offers a unique glimpse into Goa's deep-rooted Portuguese Catholic heritage and is ideal for pilgrims, history enthusiasts, and those interested in cultural and religious ceremonies.
What to experience at this festival
Travel Tips
Book accommodation in Old Goa or nearby Panjim well in advance, preferably 3-6 months prior, as hotels fill up quickly and prices surge during the festival period.
Expect large crowds, especially on the feast day (December 3rd). Navigating Old Goa on foot is recommended, so wear comfortable shoes. Consider renting a two-wheeler if you plan to explore beyond walking distance, as traffic can be dense and parking limited.
The decennial Exposition of the Sacred Relics of St. Francis Xavier, a much rarer event, extends the festival period significantly (e.g., Nov 21, 2024 – Jan 5, 2025). If planning to attend during an exposition year, prepare for even larger crowds and longer durations.
Stay hydrated and use sunscreen, as December in Goa, while pleasant, can still be warm during the day with temperatures ranging from 23°C to 31°C. Keep your belongings secure in crowded areas.
Restrictions
Dress modestly when visiting the Basilica of Bom Jesus and other religious sites. Photography may be restricted inside the veneration areas.
