Jagaddhatri Puja in West Bengal is a significant religious festival celebrating Goddess Jagaddhatri, an incarnation of Goddess Durga, revered as the 'Protector of the World'. The most elaborate celebrations take place in Chandannagar (Hooghly district) and Krishnanagar (Nadia district), drawing lakhs of devotees and tourists annually. Chandannagar distinguishes itself with towering idols reaching up to 30 feet, spectacular light installations, and a grand, night-long immersion procession on Dashami, often described as a street carnival. Krishnanagar is known for its traditional 'Bonedi Bari' pujas and idols adorned with significant gold and silver ornaments. This festival offers a unique blend of spiritual devotion and artistic display, attracting pilgrims, photographers, and culture enthusiasts. Its origins trace back to the 18th century, particularly with Maharaja Krishnachandra of Krishnanagar.
What to experience at this festival
Travel Tips
Book accommodation in Chandannagar well in advance (3-4 months) as hotels and homestays are limited and prices can significantly increase during the festival period. Consider guest houses, which might be more budget-friendly.
Local trains are the most convenient way to reach Chandannagar from Kolkata. Be prepared for extremely crowded trains, especially during peak hours, and consider traveling during off-peak times.
Wear comfortable footwear as pandal hopping involves extensive walking. Modest attire is recommended as a sign of respect for the religious nature of the festival.
Restrictions
Avoid driving personal cars in Chandannagar during the festival's peak days, especially in the afternoons and evenings. Main thoroughfares are often blocked to accommodate pedestrian traffic and processions.
