Kalpathi Ratholsavam is a 10-day Hindu temple festival celebrated in the Tamil Brahmin settlement of Kalpathy, Palakkad. Dedicated to Lord Viswanatha (Shiva) and Goddess Visalakshi (Parvati) at the over 700-year-old Sree Viswanatha Swamy Temple, it is renowned for its grand chariot procession where deities from five temples are pulled through the streets. Often called "Dakshin Kashi" or "Half Banaras" due to its historical connections and the temple's riverside location mirroring Varanasi, the festival uniquely blends Vedic rituals with Carnatic music, reflecting its distinctive cultural heritage within Kerala. The event draws pilgrims, cultural enthusiasts, and photographers seeking to experience this convergence of spiritual devotion and traditional arts. Over 200,000 people participate annually in this significant cultural and religious observance.
What to experience at this festival
Travel Tips
Book accommodation in Palakkad well in advance, preferably 3-4 months prior, as hotels and homestays fill up quickly due to the festival's popularity. Options range from budget to mid-range in Palakkad town, which is 2-4 km from Kalpathy.
Wear modest and comfortable clothing, especially when visiting temples or participating in rituals. Be prepared to remove footwear before entering temple premises, as is customary. Carry an umbrella or raincoat as November can sometimes bring unexpected rains at the end of the monsoon season.
While photography is generally allowed, always be respectful of religious sentiments and avoid disrupting ongoing rituals. Seek permission if photographing individuals up close.
Restrictions
Due to large crowds and chariot movements, specific traffic restrictions are implemented in and around Kalpathy, Palakkad, especially on the last three days of the festival. Heavy vehicles may face diversions or waiting periods; check local advisories from Palakkad Police for exact routes and timings.
