The Konark Dance Festival and International Sand Art Festival are twin cultural celebrations held annually in Konark, Puri district, Odisha. The Dance Festival, established in 1986, showcases diverse classical Indian dance forms like Odissi, Bharatanatyam, Kathak, Kuchipudi, Manipuri, Mohiniyattam, and Sattriya by acclaimed artists against the illuminated backdrop of the 13th-century Konark Sun Temple. Running concurrently, the International Sand Art Festival, which began in 2015, transforms Chandrabhaga Beach into an open-air gallery, featuring intricate sand sculptures by Indian and international artists often themed around global issues or Odia heritage. These five-day events attract thousands of art enthusiasts, classical dance connoisseurs, and international tourists, providing a unique insight into Odisha's rich artistic traditions and offering a platform for cultural exchange. A Crafts Mela also takes place, showcasing local handicrafts.

Travel Tips
Book accommodation in Konark or nearby Puri well in advance (3-6 months) for the first week of December, as options are limited and hotels fill up rapidly due to high demand during the festival.
Weather in December is pleasant (15°C to 30°C), but evenings can be cool. Carry a light jacket or shawl for comfortable viewing of evening performances at the open-air venues.
While general seating for the dance festival is usually free, consider arriving early (around 5:00 PM) to secure a good spot, especially on popular evenings. Paid premium passes may also be available.
The nearest airport is Bhubaneswar (BBI), and the nearest major railway stations are Puri and Bhubaneswar. Plan your transfers to Konark by taxi or bus in advance, as local transport can be busy during the festival.
