The Kshyat-Sowai Festival is a five-day religious and cultural observance central to the Bugun tribe of Arunachal Pradesh. Celebrated primarily in the remote Wanghoo and Dikhiyang villages within the Sinchung subdivision of West Kameng district, it is dedicated to worshipping the mountain god. The festival's purpose is to seek blessings for an abundant harvest, ward off natural calamities, and ensure the overall well-being of the community. A distinctive aspect involves the tribe's priests (phabi) and their assistants (samis) residing in a communal 'kshyat hoan' while other villagers occupy their respective clan houses ('kshyat saphao hoan'). This festival is ideal for travelers deeply interested in indigenous tribal cultures, their spiritual practices, and traditional community structures.

Travel Tips
Accommodation options in Sinchung and its surrounding villages (like Wanghoo and Dikhiyang) are primarily limited to basic homestays or guesthouses. It is highly advisable to arrange bookings or local contacts in advance due to the remote location.
Carry sufficient cash, as ATMs are scarce in remote parts of Arunachal Pradesh, including the Sinchung subdivision. Digital payment methods (UPI) may also have limited availability or connectivity.
The festival occurs in January, which is winter in Arunachal Pradesh. Be prepared for cold weather with adequate warm clothing. Roads in hilly areas can be challenging, and shared jeeps are the primary mode of local transport, often involving long and slow journeys.
Respect the Bugun tribal customs and traditions during the festival. Inquiry before photographing individuals and be mindful of sacred spaces and rituals to ensure a respectful experience.
Restrictions
An Inner Line Permit (ILP) is mandatory for Indian citizens and a Protected Area Permit (PAP) for foreign nationals to enter Arunachal Pradesh. Apply online at www.arunachalilp.com or through designated offices well before travel.
