The Namchi Mahotsav is a cultural festival celebrating the diverse ethnic communities of Sikkim, including Bhutia, Lepcha, Rai, Limboo, and Newar. Held annually in Namchi, the capital of South Sikkim, primarily at the Namchi Central Park or Festival Ground, it aims to promote tourism and local talent. The festival showcases traditional Sikkimese customs, art, handicrafts like Thanka paintings, and ethnic cuisines such as Shel-Roti and Gyakho. Visitors can experience a blend of folk performances, food shows, and exhibitions, making it appealing to those interested in local culture, food, and photography. Initiated in 2004 by the district administration and the South Sikkim Tourism Development Society, it has become a significant event attracting both locals and tourists.

Travel Tips
Book your accommodation in Namchi well in advance, preferably 2-3 months prior. As it's a popular festival, hotels and guesthouses in the area tend to sell out quickly and prices may increase during October.
Carry sufficient cash as ATM availability might be limited, and not all vendors, especially at smaller stalls, may accept digital payments or cards.
Dress in layers and carry warm clothing. While October offers pleasant weather in Namchi, evenings and mornings can be chilly at this altitude, and temperatures can drop.
Restrictions
Visitors to Sikkim generally require permits (Inner Line Permit for foreigners, Protected Area Permit for certain areas). While Namchi itself is usually accessible, it's advisable to check the latest permit regulations with the Sikkim Tourism Department or your travel agent before your trip.
