The Nehru Trophy Boat Race is a significant cultural and sporting event held annually on Punnamada Lake in Alappuzha, Kerala. Locally known as Vallam Kali, this race features massive snake boats, or 'Chundan Vallams', each propelled by 100-150 rowers in perfect synchrony to traditional chants and drumbeats. It commemorates a visit by India's first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, in 1952, who was so impressed he donated a silver trophy. This event transforms the tranquil backwaters into a vibrant arena, drawing an estimated 200,000 spectators and showcasing deep community pride and athletic prowess. It's often referred to as "Kuttanad's Olympics on Water."

Travel Tips
Book accommodation and race tickets at least 3-4 months in advance. Prices for hotels and houseboats inflate significantly during the festival, and popular viewing spots sell out quickly.
The race typically occurs on the second Saturday of August, but has been postponed to late August or September in recent years due to weather or other circumstances (e.g., September 28, 2024, August 30, 2025). Verify the exact date closer to your travel plans.
Arrive at your designated viewing area by 10-11 AM on race day to secure your spot and avoid heavy crowds and traffic bottlenecks. Boat services to island pavilions often cease by noon.
August is monsoon season in Kerala. Carry a raincoat or sturdy umbrella, and wear light, breathable clothing. Sunscreen and hats are also recommended as humidity can be high.
Even if booking tickets online, you must often collect physical tickets from designated counters (e.g., District Tourism Information Centre near KSRTC Bus Stand, Alappuzha) on the morning of the event. Plan to arrive early for collection.
Restrictions
Traffic restrictions are implemented in Alappuzha town from 9 AM on race day. Movement of private speed boats and use of drones (except for official purposes) are banned in a 100-meter radius around the race track.
