Sakewa is a nine-day religious and cultural festival central to the Kirat Khambu Rai community in Sikkim, celebrated as a profound homage to Mother Earth. It encompasses two significant periods: Sakewa Ubhauli in April/May, marking the beginning of the farming year and upward migration of birds, and Sakewa Udhauli in November/December, a thanksgiving for the harvest and downward migration. Sikkim's state government recognizes the festival with a holiday, fostering larger, inclusive celebrations where diverse communities participate. Key rituals include Bhoomi Puja and ceremonial Sili dances that depict agricultural cycles and movements of nature. While observed across the state, public events are prominent in locations like Gangtok, Namchi, and districts such as Gyalshing and West Sikkim, drawing those interested in indigenous traditions, agricultural heritage, and unique cultural performances.

Travel Tips
Sakewa is celebrated twice a year: Sakewa Ubhauli (April/May) and Sakewa Udhauli (November/December). While both are significant, recent state-level events and regional holidays in Sikkim have predominantly featured the Udhauli celebration. Verify the specific timing and location of public events closer to your travel dates.
Accommodation in Sikkim, especially in popular towns like Gangtok, can be in high demand during festival periods (April-June and September-December), leading to higher prices. Booking your stay at least 2-3 months in advance is advisable to secure preferred options.
The nearest major airport is Bagdogra (Siliguri, West Bengal) and the nearest railway station is New Jalpaiguri (NJP). From these points, shared taxis and jeeps are the primary mode of transport to Gangtok, typically costing ₹500-₹800 per person and taking 4-5 hours. Pakyong Airport in Sikkim also offers domestic flights from major Indian cities.
Restrictions
For travel to certain regions within Sikkim, particularly North Sikkim (e.g., Lachung), an Inner Line Permit (ILP) is mandatory. Obtain this permit in advance from Gangtok, typically costing around ₹200-₹300.
