Seng Kut Snem is an annual indigenous festival of the Khasi community in Meghalaya, primarily celebrated in Shillong. It commemorates the foundation of the Seng Khasi movement in 1899, formed to protect the indigenous Niam Khasi religion, culture, and language against external influences. The festival serves as a community prayer for preserving the distinct identity of the Khasi race and includes traditional thanksgiving. Visitors can witness a vibrant cultural procession, traditional Khasi dances, music played with drums and flutes, and prayers offered by Seng Khasi priests at the Weiking Ground. This festival draws those interested in indigenous cultures, history, traditional performing arts, and local cuisine.

Travel Tips
Book accommodation in Shillong well in advance, especially if planning to stay near the main celebration venues like Weiking Ground or Police Bazar, as hotels and guesthouses can fill up due to local and tourist attendance.
The nearest major airport and railway station are in Guwahati, Assam (approximately 100-128 km from Shillong). Plan your journey to Shillong using shared cabs, MTC bus services, or private taxis available from Guwahati.
Carry a raincoat or umbrella, even in November, as Meghalaya's weather can be unpredictable. Comfortable walking shoes are recommended for navigating the procession route and festival grounds.
While the festival itself is free to attend, have some cash (Indian Rupees) for food, local transport, and any handmade products you might wish to purchase. UPI payments are also widely accepted.
