The Shillong Autumn Festival is a modern cultural celebration held primarily in Shillong, Meghalaya, often on the banks of Umiam Lake. It serves as a platform to showcase the state's diverse traditions, art, and adventure tourism, organized by the Government of Meghalaya to promote tourism. While not a traditional religious festival, it brings together elements of local folk dance, music, crafts, and culinary experiences, often centered around a yearly theme. The festival blends traditional indigenous culture with modern entertainment, drawing both locals and tourists interested in music, local food, crafts, and adventure sports. It typically attracts significant crowds, including visitors from other parts of India.

Travel Tips
Book accommodation in Shillong well in advance, preferably 2-3 months prior, as hotels and guesthouses can fill up quickly and prices may increase during the festival period.
Carry sufficient cash as many local vendors and smaller establishments might not accept digital payments like UPI. ATMs are available in Shillong but can be scarce in more remote areas.
Be prepared for changeable weather. Pack layers, including light rain gear like a poncho, and comfortable walking shoes, as sudden showers are possible even outside the monsoon season.
While exploring outside the main festival venues, it's advisable to return to your accommodation before dark, generally before 8 PM, as some areas may become quiet.
