The Tawang Festival is an annual cultural celebration held in Tawang town, Arunachal Pradesh, focusing on the rich traditions of the Monpa people and broader Buddhist heritage. Initiated in 2012 by the state's Tourism Department, it serves as a platform to showcase indigenous dances, sports, arts, and local cuisine. The festival kicks off with 'Sebang,' a significant religious procession of monks from the historic Tawang Monastery to the festival grounds. This event provides a deep dive into local customs and is particularly appealing to cultural tourists, photographers, and those interested in Himalayan Buddhist culture. The celebration aims to promote Tawang as a key cultural and tourism destination in the region.

Travel Tips
Book accommodations in Tawang significantly ahead of time, as options are limited and demand surges during the festival period. Prices for hotels and homestays can be 1,500-3,000 INR per night during peak season.
Tawang is situated at an altitude of approximately 10,000 feet (3,048 meters). Travelers should plan for gradual acclimatization to avoid altitude sickness, especially if arriving directly from lower altitudes. Carry necessary medications and consult a doctor if needed.
The road journey to Tawang from the nearest major airports like Guwahati or Tezpur is long (10-12 hours) and can be challenging due to mountainous terrain. Consider breaking the journey with an overnight stop in Bomdila or Dirang to ease travel fatigue and aid acclimatization.
Weather in October/November can be crisp and cold, with windy conditions. Pack warm clothing, including layers, hats, gloves, and sturdy shoes, to comfortably enjoy outdoor events.
Restrictions
All Indian citizens require an Inner Line Permit (ILP) and foreign nationals require a Protected Area Permit (PAP) to enter Arunachal Pradesh. Apply online at eilp.arunachal.gov.in well in advance (5-8 working days for approval). Without it, entry to Tawang is denied.
