Tihar, also known as Deepawali or Yamapanchak, is a significant five-day Hindu festival celebrated across Sikkim, particularly by the Gorkha-Nepali community. While sharing similarities with the pan-India Diwali, Sikkim's Tihar has distinct rituals focusing on honoring animals associated with Yama, the god of death. The festival transforms homes and public spaces, especially in urban centers like Gangtok, with elaborate lighting, marigold decorations, and traditional songs. It offers a unique cultural immersion for travelers interested in regional Hindu practices, animal welfare, and local community celebrations. The festival primarily centers around family and community observances, with public markets bustling with activity for decorations and offerings.

Travel Tips
Book accommodation in Gangtok well in advance (3-4 months) as October and November are peak tourist months, and festival celebrations further increase demand. Availability and prices will be affected.
Shared taxis are the primary mode of inter-city and local transport in Sikkim. Familiarize yourself with routes and fares, especially for travel from Bagdogra/NJP to Gangtok.
Carry sufficient cash, though UPI and cards are accepted in many places in Gangtok. Smaller towns or local markets may rely more on cash transactions during festivities.
Restrictions
Foreign nationals typically require Protected Area Permits (PAPs) for certain regions of Sikkim. While not specifically for Tihar in Gangtok, verify requirements for any planned excursions outside the capital. Foreigners are not permitted in North Sikkim.
