The Torgya Festival is an annual Buddhist monastic celebration observed by the Monpa community exclusively at the Tawang Monastery in Arunachal Pradesh. This three-day event is centered around warding off evil spirits, preventing natural calamities, and ushering in prosperity for the new year. Monks perform intricate masked ritual dances (Chham) in the monastery's courtyard, a defining characteristic of this festival. A key ritual involves the ceremonial burning of a specially crafted effigy called 'Torma' in a 'Mechang' (a mound of dried bamboo leaves), symbolizing the destruction of negative forces. Travelers interested in unique spiritual practices, Buddhist culture, and monastic traditions will find this festival compelling, offering a distinct glimpse into the cultural heritage of the Monpa people.

Travel Tips
Tawang is a remote location, and travel involves long road journeys. The nearest domestic airport is Tezpur (Assam), roughly a 6-hour drive away, while the nearest international airport is Guwahati (Assam), approximately 480 km from Tawang. Plan your journey, including buffer days, considering road conditions and permit checks.
January in Tawang is winter and can be very cold, with temperatures often below freezing and a possibility of snowfall. Pack heavy woolen clothing, thermal wear, and appropriate footwear.
Accommodation in Tawang, particularly near the monastery, can be limited and more expensive during the festival period. Book your stays, ranging from guesthouses to hotels, several months in advance to secure a suitable option.
Restrictions
Indian citizens require an Inner Line Permit (ILP) and foreign nationals require a Protected Area Permit (PAP) to enter Arunachal Pradesh. These permits must be obtained in advance from government authorities or designated offices.
